Every March, in commemoration of International Women’s Day, the Coalition of Muslim Women of KW pays tribute to outstanding women who have made Kitchener-Waterloo a wonderful place to live through their community activism and service, by honouring them at the CMW Women Who Inspire Awards Recognition Dinner.
The Awards Dinner is truly a much-anticipated gala event, attracting 250 guests, including many local dignitaries and special guests. The evening is a vibrant mixture of award presentations and speeches, enjoyable live entertainment and a tantalizing multicultural food feast!
In 2016, the distinguished women who received awards were Imam Arab, Aida Kamel, Helen Ala Rashi, Bibi Ali and Siba Al Khadouri. Respected former Waterloo mayor Brenda Halloran received the “Friend of CMW Award”.
In 2017, the worthy award winners were Selda Sezen, Duaa Al-Aghar, Sarah Shafiq, Dr. Hind Al-Abadleh, Nada Numsi and Rahma Abukhousa. The “Friend of CMW Award” was presented to KW Counselling Services, in recognition of the tremendous support that KWCS has provided to CMW over the past five years.
CMW was honoured to have The Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women deliver the keynote address at the 2017 Awards Dinner. The Honourable Maryam Monsef is the first Canadian Muslim women to hold a cabinet position, and journeyed to this position from a challenging beginning as a new refugee in Canada.
Award winners were selected from nominations sent in by community members. In 2017, the award categories were: Inspiring Leadership, Community Service, Professional Excellence, Advocacy/Activism, Artistic Accomplishments and Outstanding Youth.
